Getting seasonal
'cause it's my favorite thing
I am all about working with fresh, seasonal food at any given time of year.
But, I’m no fresh and seasonal saint. I buy fresh broccoli in the winter because broccoli doesn’t grow very well in snow. Who wants to go all winter without broccoli?
We’re giving broccoli in our garden another try this year, something that hasn’t always gone so well in years past, but what is life without hope ya know? What’s life without broccoli for that matter?
Getting to the point, I have a couple of timely posts for you this week. One is revamped, but the other is brand new.
Chive Lemon Vinaigrette
Chive Lemon Vinaigrette has been on my blog for a while now, but I truly updated it this year. People wanted a recipe that made a bigger batch, and Google wanted bigger photos, so I hope everyone is happy. It truly is a lovely addition to springtime fresh salads and very easy to make. Tonight, we plan to have it on fresh asparagus.
Grow herbs close to the house
We have a nice big garden, with plenty of room for herbs, but I think it’s a good idea to keep some fresh herbs growing close to the house as well. They look nice, and they’re always close to hand for last minute additions to whatever you’re cooking.
Unless your porch is in total shade or blazing sun all day, you can probably get a few pots of herbs out among the flowers. It may be late to start seeds for this year, but you will likely be able to pick up some bargains as the garden plant selling season begins to wind down.
How to Freeze Rhubarb
This might seem like a no-brainer to some people, but a remarkably large number of people grew up in non-cooking households. For those folks, or for those who may have eaten rhubarb, but didn’t realize it can be saved for winter baking, How to Freeze Rhubarb might come in handy.
You can enjoy rhubarb for later in the year, and this post also has links to some of my favorite rhubarb recipes. You know - in case you want to bake something right now!
Savory Chive Cream Cheese Scones
Last but not least - here’s another recipe from the archives, just incase you have some chives left over after you make the vinaigrette. These are pretty easy to make and a real treat with a bowl of soup, or alongside a frittata. So good!
I hope you have a great weekend!
